Phlogotettix cyclops

Systematic position. Phlogotettix cyclops is a species of leafhopper belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its ability to transmit various plant pathogens, specifically phytoplasmas, which severely impact crop health and yield quality.

Host plants. This pest exhibits a polyphagous feeding behavior, attacking a wide variety of cultivated plants. Major host plants include members of the Solanaceae family, such as tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers, as well as sugar beets and various legumes. Feeding occurs predominantly on the foliage, where both nymphs and adults extract plant sap.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The species typically overwinters in the egg stage, deposited within plant tissues or the soil surface. High mobility of adults allows for rapid colonization of vegetable fields during the growing season, with multiple generations possible depending on environmental temperatures.

Damage and economic significance. The damage caused by Phlogotettix cyclops is dual-faceted. Primarily, direct feeding leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and leaf curling. Secondarily, and more critically, it acts as a vector for serious diseases such as the stolbur phytoplasma. Infected plants suffer from severe physiological disorders, leading to fruit deformation and significant loss of market value.

Management strategies. Effective control requires an integrated approach to suppress population density and minimize disease transmission:

• Rigorous weed control in and around the fields to eliminate alternative host plants and reservoirs.
• Application of reflective mulches or sticky traps to disrupt the insects and monitor activity.
• Implementation of precise irrigation and fertilization to keep plants vigorous and resilient.
• Targeted use of insecticides during the early nymphal stages when the pest is most vulnerable.
