Once the integrity of the fruit skin is compromised, the fruit becomes highly susceptible to colonization by spoilage microorganisms, leading to the rapid decay of the entire cluster.

Control measures must focus on exclusion and deterrence rather than extermination, as most species are protected by environmental laws. Practical recommendations for orchard protection include:
