Phoneutria fera, also known as the Brazilian wandering spider, belongs to the order Araneae and the family Ctenidae. It is recognized as one of the most venomous spiders in the world. Its name derives from its behavior: it is a wandering predator that does not build webs but actively traverses the forest floor and agricultural plantations in search of prey.

In the agricultural sector, this spider is regarded as a serious biological contaminant rather than a direct plant pest. It is famously associated with the banana trade, as it often hides within banana bunches during the growth and harvesting cycle. This behavior makes it a significant hazard for field workers and employees involved in the post-harvest processing of tropical fruits.

The biology of Phoneutria fera is characterized by high mobility and adaptability. Females carry their egg sacs or hide them in secure crevices, including the fruit clusters of commercial crops. They thrive in humid, shaded environments provided by dense foliage, which makes agricultural plantations an ideal habitat that supports their reproduction and hunting activities.

The economic and human threat is significant. While not destroying plants, their presence in export goods poses a severe risk to human life due to their potent neurotoxic venom. A single detection of these spiders in an imported shipment can result in quarantine protocols, entire shipment destruction, and massive financial losses for producers and distributors in the international trade market.
