Description
Systematic position. The cannabis aphid (Phorodon cannabis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized insect pest that maintains a strict biological relationship with plants of the genus Cannabis, often becoming a limiting factor for high-quality industrial hemp production.
Crops and damage. This pest primarily targets hemp and cannabis crops. The aphids congregate in large colonies on the undersides of leaves, tender stems, and developing flower heads. By sap-feeding, they drain the plant's resources, leading to chlorosis, leaf curling, stunted development, and reduced vigor of the host plant.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is complex and often includes both wingless and winged generations. Winged adults appear during the summer months to facilitate dispersal to neighboring fields. The rapid reproductive rate, driven by parthenogenetic multiplication, allows a single colony to infest an entire field in a relatively short period under favorable climatic conditions.
Damage impact. The physiological impact goes beyond simple nutrient deprivation. The secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the plant surface, inhibits photosynthesis, and severely degrades the quality of the fiber. Furthermore, the aphid acts as a mechanical vector for several plant viruses that can cause mosaic symptoms and yield losses.
Protection measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Phorodon cannabis. Management strategies include
- maintaining clean field borders by removing alternate weed hosts
- monitoring for early aphid colonization
- promoting beneficial insect populations like ladybirds and lacewings
- applying selective insecticides only when thresholds are exceeded
