Phosphuga

Phosphuga (Phosphuga atrata) is a beetle belonging to the Silphidae family, commonly known as carrion beetles, within the order Coleoptera. Unlike most members of this family, which are scavengers feeding on decaying organic matter, this specific species has evolved as a specialized predator of land mollusks, such as slugs and snails.

This species is widely distributed in forest and forest-steppe ecosystems. It prefers habitats with high humidity and significant vegetation cover. While not a primary agricultural pest in terms of direct consumption of crops, its presence is a biological indicator of areas infested with mollusks, which are known to be destructive to vegetable crops.

The life cycle of Phosphuga involves complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Both adults and larvae overwinter in the soil or beneath leaf litter. They become active in early spring, initiating their search for prey.
