Description

The Reed Wainscot (Phragmatiphila nexa) is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae, order Lepidoptera. It is primarily recognized as a specialist feeder, with its life cycle intimately connected to wetland and riparian vegetation, particularly common reeds and related grasses.

This pest is known to target various grass species (Poaceae). While its primary host remains the common reed (Phragmites), in regions where agricultural land encroaches upon natural marshlands, the pest can impact cultivated cereal crops, such as rice, where it acts as a stem-boring insect.

The biology of Phragmatiphila involves a complete metamorphosis. The larvae, or caterpillars, are stem-borers by nature. Upon hatching, they quickly penetrate the stems of the host plant. They spend their entire developmental period feeding on internal pith and tissues, which protects them from environmental stressors and traditional contact-based predators.

The damage caused by the Reed Wainscot is characterized by the internal hollowing of stems. This systemic disruption limits nutrient and water transport to the upper parts of the plant, often causing the central shoot to wilt and die (a condition sometimes known as "dead heart"). Significant infestations can lead to substantial reductions in crop yield and plant vigor.
