Systematic position. Poplar phylloxerina (Phylloxerina popularia) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is a highly specialized insect that completes its entire life cycle on host plants within the genus Populus, acting as a significant pest in both forestry and urban landscape environments.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this species include various members of the poplar family, particularly black poplars and balsam poplars. Infestations are most commonly observed in young plantations, roadside windbreaks, and park settings where the presence of the insect can lead to severe aesthetic and physiological damage to the trees.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Phylloxerina popularia is complex and involves several generations. The insect overwinters as larvae hidden within the crevices of tree bark on stems and branches. In early spring, as buds begin to burst, the founding females migrate to the emerging young leaves, where their feeding activity triggers the development of characteristic galls.

Damage and harmfulness. The characteristic sign of infestation is the formation of numerous galls on leaf blades. These structures act as shelters for the colony while they extract nutrients from the leaf tissue. This process causes significant deformation, necrosis of the affected areas, and premature leaf senescence, ultimately reducing the tree's vigor and growth rate.

Control measures. Controlling poplar phylloxerina is challenging due to the protective nature of the galls, which shield the insects from topical chemical applications. Recommended strategies include:

• Applying systemic insecticides in early spring just as the buds open, to target the insects before gall formation is complete.
• Collecting and destroying fallen leaves in the autumn to eliminate overwintering populations.
• Selecting resistant poplar clones and varieties for new plantings to prevent large-scale outbreaks.
• Maintaining overall tree health through proper fertilization and watering to help the plants tolerate minor infestation levels.
