Willow leaf phylloxera (Phylloxerina salicicola) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is a notorious gall-forming insect that targets specific species of the genus Salix, significantly impacting both native willow stands and ornamental nursery stock.

The primary hosts for this pest include a wide variety of willow species. Its life history is closely tied to the host's development, as it relies on young leaf tissue to initiate gall formation, which provides both nutrition and shelter for the developing colony.

The biological cycle involves overwintering eggs deposited in bark crevices or near bud scales. As temperatures rise in spring, the hatching nymphs settle on new leaves. Their feeding activities trigger the plant to develop galls, an abnormal cellular growth that effectively isolates the insects from external environmental stresses and many predators.
