Willow phylloxerid

The willow phylloxerid (Phylloxerina salicis) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Phylloxeridae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is exclusively associated with trees of the genus Salix, serving as its primary host plant for nutrition and reproduction throughout its life cycle.

The host range is limited to various species of willow, which can be found in natural forest ecosystems, commercial plantations, and urban landscapes. The pest predominantly targets the underside of the leaves and young green shoots, making it a difficult adversary to detect before significant damage has occurred.

The biology of Phylloxerina salicis is complex, characterized by multiple generations during the growing season. The winter season is passed in the egg stage, typically sheltered in bark crevices or near bud scales. When spring temperatures rise, the fundatrix (founder) nymphs emerge and immediately begin to feed on the host plant, triggering the formation of characteristic galls.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily mechanical and physiological. The formation of galls severely disrupts the leaf structure, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and premature defoliation. In cases of severe infestation, the cumulative impact leads to weakened vigor, diminished annual growth, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections.

Effective management strategies require a combination of monitoring and intervention:

• Early spring application of dormant oils to target overwintering eggs.
• Use of systemic insecticides upon the appearance of the first spring generation.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the pest population density.
• Promoting overall tree health through adequate irrigation and balanced fertilization to improve plant tolerance.
