Taxonomic classification: The genus Physa belongs to the class Gastropoda, the order Pulmonata, and the family Physidae. These freshwater snails are commonly found in stagnant or slow-moving waters, as well as in controlled environments like greenhouses and hydroponic setups, where they can thrive due to the abundance of organic matter and plant foliage.

Affected crops: This snail is a significant nuisance in aquarium cultivation and commercial aquatic plant production. Physa primarily attacks soft-leaved aquatic and semi-aquatic plants. Crops such as Vallisneria, Hygrophila, Elodea, and various aquatic mosses are particularly susceptible to the damage caused by these snails.

Biology and life cycle: Physa is a hermaphroditic species known for its prolific breeding habits. A single snail can lay gelatinous egg masses on the underside of leaves or hard surfaces. The embryonic development is remarkably rapid, allowing a population to reach invasive densities within a very short period when water temperatures are maintained between 20°C and 25°C.

Damage patterns and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by the snails' radula, which scrapes away the epidermis and creates large holes in plant leaves. High populations lead to significant degradation of plant tissues, leading to stunted growth, decay, and the release of organic waste into the water, which can adversely affect the overall health of the aquatic ecosystem.

Control measures: Effective management includes strict quarantine of new plants to prevent the introduction of eggs. Physical removal of snails and egg clusters is standard practice for smaller systems. Biological control using snail-eating fish species, such as pufferfish or macropods, is highly recommended. In large-scale operations, selective molluscicides may be used, though careful monitoring is required to ensure the safety of other aquatic life.
