Description
Cambium fly (Phytobia cambii) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Agromyzidae within the order Diptera. Unlike many other agromyzids that mine leaves, the larvae of this species feed specifically in the vascular cambium of living hardwood trees, causing permanent structural defects in the wood.
This pest affects a range of deciduous tree species, including birch (Betula), linden (Tilia), beech (Fagus), and oak (Quercus). It is particularly problematic in stands where the health and vigor of the trees are compromised, making them more susceptible to larval establishment and subsequent damage.
The life cycle begins when the adult female inserts her eggs into the thin, young bark of the tree. Once hatched, the larvae begin to mine downward through the cambium layer. This feeding process continues throughout the season, and as the larvae reach maturity, they chew exit holes through the bark to pupate in the soil.
The damage caused by Phytobia cambii is primarily aesthetic and structural. As the tree grows, the cambial zone produces new xylem (wood) over the larval tunnels. This results in the formation of permanent discolored streaks or «pith flecks» within the wood grain, which significantly downgrade the quality of timber used for furniture or high-value veneer.
Controlling the cambium fly is challenging due to the larvae's protected habitat beneath the bark. Effective management strategies rely heavily on silvicultural practices rather than pesticides. This includes maintaining optimal forest density, promoting tree vigor, and removing heavily infested or weakened trees during routine sanitary logging operations to manage population levels.
