Cherry cambium fly

The Cherry cambium fly (Latin: Phytobia cerasiferae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. Unlike leaf-mining flies, this species specifically targets the cambium layer beneath the bark of fruit trees, causing internal damage that is often hidden until it is too late.

The primary hosts of this pest include stone fruit trees, with a strong preference for cherry and sweet cherry species. In some regions, certain plum varieties are also recorded as hosts. The presence of these insects is often overlooked because they do not cause defoliation, but their impact on the tree's vascular system can be significant over several seasons.

The biological cycle of the fly involves adult females laying eggs in the bark of young shoots or stems. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the living cambium layer, where they feed and create winding tunnels. Once the larval development is complete, they exit the tree trunk, fall to the ground, and pupate in the soil until the next season.

Damage caused by Phytobia cerasiferae appears as irregular, winding trails or streaks under the bark, which can often be detected by gum exudation on the surface of the trunk or branches. These tunnels disrupt the nutrient transport system of the tree, weakening it and creating entry points for opportunistic fungal pathogens and wood-rotting bacteria.

Management and control strategies for the cherry cambium fly focus on early detection and prevention:

• Regular visual inspection of trunks and major branches for atypical gumming or surface bark irregularities.
• Mechanical removal of severely infested bark sections, followed by the application of protective wound dressings.
• Applying systemic insecticides at the appropriate time to target the egg-laying adults before they deposit eggs into the bark.
• Maintaining healthy orchards through proper irrigation and fertilization, as stressed trees are more susceptible to infestations.
