Phytoliriomyza jacarandae
Description
Systematic position. The insect belongs to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae (leaf miner flies). Phytoliriomyza jacarandae is a host-specific pest that primarily targets the foliage of certain ornamental tree species, thriving in environments where its host plant is cultivated.
Host plants and damage. The primary host is the blue jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia). This pest causes significant aesthetic damage to landscape trees. By consuming the leaf tissue, the larvae reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, which often leads to premature leaf drop and stunted growth.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult females deposit eggs into the leaf epidermis. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin tunneling into the mesophyll, creating narrow, meandering mines as they feed and grow through multiple instars.
Nature of damage. The damage is characterized by distinct serpentine white mines visible on the leaf surface. In cases of high infestation, the mines overlap, leading to extensive tissue necrosis, yellowing of the foliage, and eventually leaf senescence, which detracts from the tree's overall health and appearance.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this miner.
- Sanitation: Remove and dispose of infested leaves to interrupt the life cycle.
- Monitoring: Use yellow sticky traps to detect adult activity.
- Chemical control: Application of systemic insecticides can be effective when larvae are active within the leaf tissue.
