Phytomyza is a genus of flies belonging to the family Agromyzidae within the order Diptera. These insects are well-known as leafminers, meaning their larvae feed inside the leaf tissue, creating visible tunnels or "mines" as they consume the interior layers of the host plant.

They affect a wide range of plants, particularly vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and cruciferous crops, as well as various ornamental plants. Their presence is often detected by the characteristic winding, serpentine patterns left behind on the surface of the leaves, which makes identification relatively straightforward for an agronomist.

The life cycle of the leafminer consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females puncture the leaf surface to lay eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin mining.
