Description
The columbine leafminer (Phytomyza aquilegiae) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. It is a highly specialized pest that primarily targets plants of the genus Aquilegia. As an agronomical challenge, it is particularly relevant for nurseries and gardeners focusing on perennial flowering plants.
The damage is primarily caused by the larval stage, which feeds on the mesophyll tissue of the columbine leaves. Adult flies feed on plant sap by puncturing the leaf epidermis, which can also cause minor physiological stress to the plant throughout the active growing season.
The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs within the leaf tissue. After hatching, the larvae create winding tunnels (mines) as they consume the interior parts of the leaf.
