Description
Taxonomic position. The Columbine leafminer (Phytomyza aquilegiana) is a member of the Diptera order, specifically the Agromyzidae family. These insects are classified as specialized leaf miners because their larval stage is strictly dependent on internal plant tissues for nutrition and development.
Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the genus Aquilegia (columbines). Given the popularity of columbines as ornamental garden plants, the damage caused by this insect can be widespread in residential gardens and commercial nursery settings.
Biology and life cycle. The adult fly deposits eggs into the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed on the mesophyll, creating distinctive winding trails or "mines" as they burrow through the leaf.
