Host plants primarily include species of the Aquilegia (columbine) genus. The insect is highly host-specific, meaning it thrives primarily where columbines are cultivated, often becoming a persistent problem in perennial flower gardens.
Biology and life cycle involve the transformation from egg to larva, pupa, and adult fly. The adult female oviposits into the leaf tissue, and upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin tunneling within the leaf. The feeding process creates a characteristic mine, and after reaching maturity, the insect pupates either within the leaf or in the surrounding soil.
