Description
The Peach leaf miner fly, scientifically known as Phytomyza persicae, belongs to the Agromyzidae family within the order Diptera. As a specialized agricultural pest, it primarily targets trees of the genus Prunus, with peaches being the most susceptible host to its infestation.
The damage caused by this insect is distinctive. Larvae feed exclusively on the mesophyll tissue within the leaf, creating meandering, thread-like channels or "mines." These activities disrupt the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage, leading to premature yellowing and eventual leaf drop, which weakens the overall health of the peach tree.
The life cycle of Phytomyza persicae consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult female deposits eggs into the epidermal layer of the leaves.
