Spruce shoot gall midge

Systematic position. The spruce shoot gall midge (Piceacecis abietiperda) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a highly specialized gall-forming insect that focuses its life cycle on the genus Picea, primarily affecting spruce trees in nursery settings and forest ecosystems.

Host plants and damage. The primary host is the Norway spruce. The larvae induce the formation of characteristic galls on the tree's shoots. These deformities disrupt the flow of nutrients within the branch, leading to stunted growth, twisting of the new shoots, and a significant loss of structural integrity in young trees.

Biology and life cycle. The adult midges emerge in spring when the host tree begins its vegetative season. Females oviposit on the surface of tender young shoots. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the bark and stimulate the plant to grow a gall around them. The larvae typically overwinter inside these galls, protected from external threats, before pupating in the spring.

Economic importance. This pest is particularly problematic for young plantings. Severe infestation leads to poor tree form, which is critical in nursery production for ornamental use. Additionally, the galls create entry points for secondary pathogens and fungi, which may lead to shoot necrosis and reduced overall health of the forest stand.

Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies include:

• Physical removal and destruction of infested shoots displaying galls before the adult insects emerge.
• Promoting healthy tree growth through proper nutrition and watering to make the shoots less susceptible.
• Application of systemic insecticides if pest population density exceeds the economic threshold in nurseries.
• Regular inspections of spruce plantations during the early spring to identify and isolate infested trees.
