Piesma josifovi

Piesma josifovi is a pest insect belonging to the family Piesmidae within the order Hemiptera. In agricultural practice, this species is recognized as a specific type of beet lace bug, capable of inflicting significant damage to cultivated fields through its feeding habits and disease transmission.

This pest primarily attacks plants in the Amaranthaceae family, with sugar beet, table beet, and fodder beet being the main hosts. Secondary food sources may include various weeds, which serve as reservoirs for the population until the emergence of the primary agricultural crops.

The biology of this species involves the development of several generations per season. Adults (imago) overwinter in plant debris, fallen leaves, or the upper soil layers in fields and field margins. In the spring, as temperatures rise, the bugs migrate to crops to feed and oviposit on the underside of the leaves of host plants.

Damage occurs through the intensive suction of cell sap from the leaf tissues. At the puncture sites, small light-colored spots appear, which eventually coalesce, leading to yellowing, leaf deformation, and wilting. Beyond direct mechanical damage, these bugs are known vectors for the beet curly top virus, which causes severe yield losses and reduces sugar content in the root crops.
