Pea crab
Pinnotheres
Description
The pea crab (lat. Pinnotheres) is a genus of small crabs belonging to the family Pinnotheridae, within the order Decapoda. These organisms are recognized for their highly specialized ecological niche, as they live as symbiotic or parasitic inhabitants within the mantle cavities of various marine invertebrates, predominantly bivalve mollusks.
In the field of aquaculture, the pea crab is considered a significant pest of shellfish. While they do not affect terrestrial crops, their economic impact on mussel, oyster, and scallop farming industries is substantial. They occupy the space where the mollusk filters its food, effectively acting as an unwanted tenant that negatively influences the health of the host.
The life cycle begins with planktonic larvae that swim freely in the marine environment. Once these larvae reach a suitable host, they enter the bivalve's cavity and undergo a transformation. The females are typically larger than males and spend their entire adult life inside the mollusk, benefiting from the protection and food sources provided by the host.
The damage caused by Pinnotheres is characterized by a reduction in the host's growth rate and overall vitality. By consuming the plankton and organic matter captured by the mollusk's gills, the crab deprives the host of essential nutrients. In high-density infestations, this leads to tissue damage, decreased meat yield, and potential mortality of the cultured shellfish population.
Managing this pest in aquaculture settings is challenging due to the intimate connection between the host and the parasite. Growers focus on prevention and maintenance rather than eradication. Essential practices include:
- Rigorous site selection to avoid areas with high crab density.
- Installation of fine-mesh gear to exclude larvae from reaching young shellfish.
- Regular health checks to identify and remove infested stock to prevent spreading.
