Planococcus mealybug

Systematic position: The genus Planococcus belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Pseudococcidae. These small sap-sucking insects are commonly known as mealybugs due to the white, powdery waxy secretion that covers the bodies of adult females, giving them a flour-like appearance.

Host crops: This pest is a significant polyphage known for damaging a wide range of plants. It heavily infests citrus trees, grapes, coffee plants, ornamental indoor plants like ficus and palms, and various greenhouse vegetables. In protected cultivation environments, it can infest almost any ornamental or food crop.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside white, fluffy, wax-like egg sacs that protect the developing progeny. The cycle is rapid, especially in warm and humid conditions (25–30°C), allowing for multiple generations per year and quick population explosions in infested areas.

Nature of damage: Planococcus species feed by inserting their stylets into plant tissues to suck sap from young shoots, leaves, buds, and fruit. As they feed, they excrete honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth. This suppresses photosynthesis, leading to leaf yellowing, fruit deformation, plant stunting, and potential defoliation.

Control measures: Management requires a multi-faceted approach combining cultural and chemical controls. Regular field scouting is crucial, as is the removal of heavily infested plant parts and strict adherence to phytosanitary protocols. Control is achieved through systemic insecticides or biological control agents, such as the predatory beetle Cryptolaemus montrouzieri.
