Description

Planococcus bendovi is a significant species of mealybug belonging to the family Pseudococcidae and the order Hemiptera. This pest is recognized for its ability to infest various indoor and outdoor horticultural plants, causing substantial physiological stress to the host through sap-sucking activity.

The host range of this insect includes ornamental plants, citrus varieties, and several vegetable species grown in greenhouses or tropical conditions. Because it thrives in controlled environments, it is a constant threat to commercial nursery production and private glasshouse collections.

The life cycle involves egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside a protective, cottony, white waxy ovisac. Newly hatched nymphs, known as crawlers, are highly mobile and disperse across the plant host, eventually settling in sheltered spots like leaf axils or along the veins of the leaves to feed.

Damage is characterized by stunted growth, yellowing of leaves, and deformation of young shoots. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth, which inhibits photosynthesis and significantly reduces the marketability and vigor of the ornamental or crop plant.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for control:

  • Strict quarantine and inspection of incoming plant materials.
  • Physical removal of infested plant parts and colonies.
  • Application of systemic insecticides or horticultural oils to suffocate adults.
  • Introduction of natural enemies like Cryptolaemus montrouzieri or other predatory beetles.
  • Optimization of greenhouse ventilation to reduce humidity levels that favor rapid breeding.
