Coffee mealybug
Planococcus kenyae
Description
Systematic position The coffee mealybug (Planococcus kenyae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses in various tropical crops by siphoning plant sap and transmitting viral diseases.
Host plants The primary host is the coffee plant, but the species is highly polyphagous. It commonly infests cocoa, citrus trees, avocado, cotton, and a variety of ornamental indoor plants. Its ability to adapt to different hosts makes it a persistent challenge in integrated pest management programs.
Biology and life cycle Adult females are covered in a white waxy secretion that provides resistance to pesticides and environmental stress. The life cycle involves egg production within a waxy ovisac. First-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are the primary dispersal stage and are capable of moving between plants or being carried by wind, facilitating rapid infestation of new areas.
Damage patterns and harmfulness The mealybugs aggregate on young shoots, floral buds, and fruits. Feeding causes severe plant stress, stunted growth, leaf distortion, and fruit drop. Furthermore, their honeydew secretion promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks photosynthesis and drastically reduces the market value of the harvested produce.
Management and control Controlling Planococcus kenyae requires a combination of strategies:
- Biological control: Releasing natural predators and parasitoid wasps that specifically target this mealybug species.
- Cultural practices: Pruning infested shoots and maintaining optimal plant health to improve resistance.
- Chemical control: Applying systemic insecticides during the crawler stage to ensure maximum efficacy.
- Monitoring: Utilizing pheromone traps to detect infestations at an early stage for timely intervention.
