Description

Systematic position: The litchi mealybug (Planococcus litchi) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a small sap-sucking insect that has evolved to thrive on perennial woody plants in tropical and subtropical climates, posing a significant challenge to orchard management.

Crops and damage: The primary host is the litchi tree (Litchi chinensis). However, this pest can also infest citrus, mango, and coffee trees. The damage is caused by the nymphs and adults feeding on the phloem sap of young shoots, leaves, and fruit, which leads to stunted growth, organ deformation, and significant yield loss.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females are protected by a white waxy secretion, which makes them resilient to environmental stress and certain chemical sprays. Under favorable temperatures, the species reproduces rapidly, allowing populations to expand across an entire orchard within a short period.

Nature of injury: As the mealybugs feed, they excrete honeydew, a sugary substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This black fungal layer covers the leaves, significantly reducing the tree's ability to photosynthesize. Furthermore, heavy infestations lead to premature fruit drop and an overall decline in tree health and vigor.

Control measures: Management of Planococcus litchi requires a diversified approach to minimize chemical reliance.
