Systematic position of this pest places it within the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. Planococcus mali is a specialized species known to cause economic losses in pome fruit orchards by sap-sucking activity, often going unnoticed until significant colony populations are established.

This pest mainly infests apple and pear trees, though other Rosaceae species can serve as hosts. The mealybugs prefer sheltered parts of the plant, such as crevices in the bark, under bud scales, and on the underside of leaves near the veins. This specific placement allows them to remain protected from environmental factors and contact pesticides.

Biology and life cycle involve distinct stages where adult females produce white, waxy secretions that form an ovisac. These ovisacs provide protection for hundreds of eggs. Once hatched, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, actively move across the plant surfaces to colonize new shoots and fruits, typically completing several generations per year depending on the climate conditions.

Damage and pest status are characterized by the yellowing and wilting of foliage due to nutrient depletion. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers leaves and fruit with a dark, unsightly layer. This mold inhibits photosynthesis and can lead to fruit skin damage, significantly reducing the market value of the harvest.

Protection measures should rely on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. Monitoring for the appearance of crawlers is critical for timing chemical applications correctly. Recommended actions include:

• Maintaining tree vigor through proper pruning to improve light and air circulation.
• Applying dormant oil treatments to destroy overwintering egg masses.
• Utilizing systemic insecticides during the peak activity period of young nymphs.
• Encouraging natural predators such as ladybirds and parasitic wasps.
