Description

Systematic position: Plastosciara perniciosa belongs to the order Diptera, family Sciaridae. These small flies are commonly known as fungus gnats. They are recognized as significant pests in greenhouse environments due to their ability to thrive in moist, organic-rich growing media.

Host crops: The pest primarily attacks a wide range of vegetable seedlings, ornamental pot plants, and flowers grown in protected environments. Crops cultivated in peat-based substrates are particularly susceptible to heavy infestations, as these mediums provide an ideal environment for larval development.
