Platydemus

Platydemus (Platydemus manokwari) is a highly invasive species of predatory terrestrial flatworm, belonging to the family Geoplanidae within the order Tricladida. Originating from New Guinea, it has successfully colonized various environments worldwide, often causing severe disruption to local invertebrate biodiversity.

While this flatworm does not feed directly on plant tissues, it is considered a pest due to its impact on the soil ecosystem. The primary diet of Platydemus manokwari consists of terrestrial snails and slugs. By aggressively hunting these mollusks, it eliminates the natural cleanup crews of garden habitats and threatens native mollusk species with extinction.

The biology of this species allows it to thrive in varied habitats, particularly in warm, humid regions. These worms are hermaphroditic and can reproduce rapidly when conditions are favorable. They are highly resilient and capable of surviving for several weeks without food, which facilitates their dispersal through international trade in nursery plants and topsoil.

The negative impact of this species is primarily ecological. By reducing the populations of earthworms and other soil invertebrates, the flatworm indirectly causes soil degradation. Reduced soil aeration and altered decomposition of organic matter lead to poor crop growth, making the long-term maintenance of soil fertility and plant health significantly more difficult.

Management and protection strategies are focused on containment and exclusion:

• Comprehensive visual inspections of shipments for signs of flatworm activity.
• Removal and destruction of any identified specimens to break the reproductive cycle.
