Description

Systematic position: The genus Platylygus belongs to the family Miridae, commonly known as plant bugs, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as major pests in various horticultural sectors due to their ability to damage plant tissues via their piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Crops damaged: These bugs primarily target fruit-bearing trees, including apples, pears, and stone fruits. Their feeding activities are not limited to commercial orchards, as they also inhabit various native woody plants, which often act as primary hosts before insects move to cultivated varieties.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle generally involves overwintering as eggs inserted into the bark of twigs. Upon hatching in the spring, nymphs begin feeding immediately on succulent tissues. The species often completes one or more generations per year, with adults being highly mobile and capable of reinfesting orchards throughout the summer months.
