Plemeliella

Systematic position. Plemeliella belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges). These insects are specialized pests that have evolved to complete their life cycle within the cones and seeds of coniferous trees, specifically targeting spruce species.

Host plants and economic impact. The primary host is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). This pest is a significant threat to forest seed production because larvae feed inside the developing seeds, consuming the endosperm and embryo. This destruction leads to substantial loss of viable seeds, which disrupts natural forest regeneration and nursery operations.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Plemeliella is highly synchronized with the phenology of the host tree. Adult midges emerge during the spruce flowering period. Females oviposit directly into the developing seeds. The larvae remain inside the seed throughout the growing season, feeding and developing until the cones mature.

Nature of damage. Externally, infested cones often show little sign of damage until late in the season. Internally, however, the seeds are hollowed out or filled with larval frass. Heavy infestations can cause premature cone drop or visible deformation of the cones, significantly reducing the yield and germination quality of harvested seeds.

Control measures. Controlling Plemeliella is challenging because larvae are protected within the cone scales during most of their development. Effective management relies on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), emphasizing sanitation measures such as removing fallen cones and monitoring adult flight times to apply control agents during the brief period of egg-laying.
