Pleroneura

Taxonomy. Pleroneura is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera, specifically the family Xyelidae. These insects are known as primitive sawflies that are highly host-specific, primarily targeting members of the Pinaceae family, with a distinct preference for true firs.

Host plants. The primary hosts for Pleroneura are species of the genus Abies (fir trees). They are significant pests in both nursery settings and forest plantations, where their presence can disrupt the natural development of saplings and impact the long-term timber quality and aesthetic value of the trees.

Biology and life cycle. These insects follow a univoltine life cycle, meaning they complete only one generation per year. Adult sawflies emerge in the early spring, coinciding with the bud break of the host tree. Females deposit their eggs deep into the scales of developing terminal buds, ensuring the larvae have immediate access to food.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding activity of the larvae inside the growing shoot causes it to wilt, yellow, and eventually die. Because the larvae target the developing shoot tissues, the main stem of the branch or leader is destroyed, often resulting in stunted height growth, stem deformation, or the development of a bushy, multi-stemmed growth pattern.

Management strategies. Effective control is challenging due to the endophagous nature of the larvae, which are protected by the plant tissue. Management efforts should focus on precise timing of chemical applications during the adult activity window or strictly adhering to sanitation protocols by removing infested terminal buds before the larvae reach maturity.
