Description
The green apple capsid (Plesiocoris rugicollis) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Miridae family. It is a well-known pest in temperate fruit orchards, particularly causing significant damage to apple trees and various willow species, leading to aesthetic and physiological degradation of the crop.
The host range is primarily focused on apple trees, although the pest is occasionally found on pears and currants. Both nymphs and adults feed on the sap of growing shoots, young leaves, and developing fruitlets. This feeding behavior is particularly destructive during the early stages of the growing season.
The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs inserted into the bark of young twigs. Nymphs emerge in spring, coinciding with the bud burst stage of the apple trees. They progress through five instars, feeding throughout the late spring and early summer. By mid-summer, adult bugs emerge, mate, and deposit eggs that will remain dormant until the following year.
Damage is characterized by small, necrotic spots on leaves that eventually tear, leaving a shot-hole appearance. Severe infestations result in stunted, twisted leaves and distorted fruit. The fruit often develops characteristic corky scabs and lumps, significantly reducing the commercial value and marketability of the harvest.
Management strategies require careful timing of interventions. Orchard monitoring through visual inspection of young foliage is essential. Chemical control is typically implemented if the population exceeds threshold levels, specifically targeting the period between the green cluster stage and petal fall to prevent early-season damage.
