Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Plesiommata involves several nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. Females typically deposit eggs beneath the epidermis of young leaves or twigs. The nymphs are highly mobile and begin feeding on plant phloem almost immediately upon hatching, which contributes to their rapid population growth under optimal climatic conditions.

Damage patterns and economic impact. The primary damage is caused by the extraction of plant sap, which leads to localized chlorosis, stunted shoot development, and leaf curling. Furthermore, Plesiommata can serve as vectors for various plant pathogens, significantly impacting tree vitality, reducing photosynthesis efficiency, and ultimately leading to measurable declines in fruit yield and quality.

Protection measures. Effective management of this pest requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• Implementation of sticky traps to monitor adult population levels.
• Targeted application of systemic insecticides during the peak nymphal activity period.
• Regular pruning to remove infested plant parts and improve canopy ventilation.
• Weed management in the orchard to eliminate alternative hosts for the leafhoppers.
