Description

Systematic position. The asparagus fly (Plioreocepta poeciloptera) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae (fruit flies). It is a significant pest primarily affecting asparagus crops in Europe, capable of causing substantial yield reductions if left unmanaged.

Host plants and damage. The species exclusively attacks asparagus (Asparagus officinalis). The damage is caused by the larvae, which bore into the stems. This feeding activity disrupts the transport of nutrients and causes the shoots to become stunted, deformed, and often brittle, leading to complete loss of marketability.

Biology and life cycle. The adult flies emerge in the spring during the sprouting season of the asparagus. Females lay eggs under the scales of young shoots. After hatching, the larvae penetrate the stem and feed on the interior tissue for several weeks. Once developed, the larvae typically pupate in the soil or within the withered stems.

Nature of symptoms. Infested shoots show clear signs of distress: they often bend into a "shepherd's crook" shape, turn yellow, and fail to grow vertically. If not controlled, secondary bacterial infections often invade the bored tunnels, causing the entire shoot to rot prematurely.

Protection measures. Effective control requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

  • Early harvesting of shoots to remove potential egg-laying sites.
  • Removal and immediate destruction of infested, deformed stems.
  • Application of selective insecticides during the peak flight period of the adults.
  • Deep tillage post-harvest to disrupt the pupation sites in the soil.
