Systematic position: The lesser masked weaver (Ploceus intermedius) belongs to the order Passeriformes and the family Ploceidae. This small weaver bird is native to parts of Africa and is recognized in agricultural circles as a potential pest due to its habit of forming large, destructive feeding flocks that target cultivated crops.

Affected crops: This bird species frequently targets cereal and grain legumes. Major losses are recorded in pearl millet, sorghum, maize, and rice fields. During the ripening phase, these birds gather in vast numbers to consume seeds, often causing significant damage to the harvest across large agricultural areas.

Biology and lifecycle: Weavers are colonial birds known for constructing elaborate, hanging nests in trees near water sources or food supplies. Their reproductive cycle is often synchronized with rainfall patterns, which leads to periodic explosions in population size. These social dynamics allow them to coordinate feeding behavior, which is particularly detrimental to large-scale grain production.

Character of damage and severity: The primary economic damage occurs when flocks descend upon fields at the milk or dough stage of grain development. By stripping grains from ears and panicles, they directly reduce yields.
