Plumatella is a genus of freshwater bryozoans that poses a significant challenge for precision agriculture, particularly in hydroponics and automated irrigation systems. These colonial organisms grow as branching or encrusting masses, which can physically obstruct water flow and interfere with the nutrient delivery essential for crop health.

The primary targets for these organisms are water supply lines, emitters, pump intakes, and filtration units. By colonizing these infrastructure components, Plumatella causes significant flow reductions, leading to uneven nutrient distribution and potential yield loss across the greenhouse or field production area.

The biology of Plumatella is characterized by high adaptability. They reproduce through both sexual and asexual methods, with the production of statoblasts—dormant, highly resistant buds. Statoblasts can remain viable even when a system is drained and dried, allowing them to rapidly repopulate once water flow and suitable temperatures return.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily mechanical and sanitary. In addition to reducing hydraulic efficiency, the dense colonies form a matrix that traps organic debris and supports the growth of harmful bacteria, which can migrate to crop roots and cause secondary infections or plant stress.

Effective management and control measures include:

• Installing filtration systems that prevent the entry of larvae into the main lines.
• Utilizing UV sterilization lamps to neutralize larvae before they settle and form colonies.
