Putnam's Looper Moth

Putnam's Looper Moth (Plusia putnami) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. As a member of the Plusiinae subfamily, this insect is recognized as a potential agricultural pest in temperate regions of North America and Eurasia, where it occasionally reaches density levels that threaten local crop production.

The host range of Plusia putnami primarily includes various grasses and cereal crops. Its larvae are known to feed on cultivated grains like wheat and barley, as well as several species of wild grasses found in and around fields. The adult moths are nocturnal, often displaying distinctive metallic patches on their forewings, which is a common characteristic of the subfamily.

The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically undergoes seasonal cycles adapted to local climates. Overwintering occurs in the pupal stage or as late-instar larvae protected within leaf litter or the upper soil profile, allowing the species to survive low winter temperatures and re-emerge in early spring.

Damage caused by the larvae involves defoliation of the host plant. They consume leaf tissue, often causing ragged holes or severe leaf margin feeding. When populations are high, significant loss of photosynthetic leaf area occurs, which leads to reduced plant vigor, delayed maturity, and reduced yield potential. Their feeding habit is typical of "loopers," moving by arching their backs.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as soil cultivation and field sanitation, are essential to disrupt overwintering habitats. In cases of severe infestation, chemical control using targeted insecticides at the early larval stages is recommended. Scouting fields regularly using pheromone traps can help farmers apply control measures only when necessary.
