European golden plover

The European golden plover (Latin: Pluvialis apricaria) is a member of the Charadriidae family, belonging to the order Charadriiformes. While primarily an avian species valued for biodiversity, it can occasionally impact agricultural productivity. These birds are known for their migratory behavior and their tendency to congregate in large flocks on open agricultural fields during spring and autumn seasons.

Crops potentially affected by the foraging activities of the European golden plover include newly emerged cereal seedlings, pulses, and occasionally vegetable crops. Although they mainly consume soil-dwelling invertebrates, their feeding habits often result in the displacement of seeds and the trampling of emerging seedlings, which can negatively affect the overall uniformity and health of the crop stand.

The biological cycle of this bird is heavily dictated by long-distance migration. During their passage, these birds utilize agricultural fields as resting and feeding stopovers. Their presence on farmland is seasonal and intermittent, making it a transient challenge for farmers. Their preference for open, moist ground makes fields under irrigation or recently cultivated soil particularly attractive to them.

The economic harm is primarily characterized by patchy seedling emergence and mechanical damage to the topsoil layer. While not classified as a major agricultural pest like locusts or rodents, the concentration of large flocks can lead to localized yield reductions, particularly in areas where seeding depth is insufficient or soil conditions make young plants easier to uproot or disturb.

Effective management strategies focus on non-lethal deterrents to protect young crops. These measures include:

• using propane cannons or bio-acoustic deterrent systems;
• deploying visual scarecrows or reflective materials across the field;
• ensuring precise mechanical sowing to bury seeds at the appropriate depth;
