Pneumora (lat. Pneumora) is a genus of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Pneumoridae. These insects are biologically distinct due to their inflated abdomen, which acts as a resonator for sound production. In agricultural environments, they are classified as potential pests that can affect various types of local vegetation and crops depending on their habitat range.
Taxonomically, the genus is placed within the superfamily Eumastacoidea. Their evolutionary adaptations are focused on crypsis and specialized sound production, which serves as a mating signal. Because of these features, they are often difficult to detect in field environments, making integrated pest management (IPM) challenging for local agronomists.
The damage caused by Pneumora typically involves the consumption of leaves and soft stems. By feeding on the leaf epidermis, they disrupt the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently. While individual damage might seem negligible, a high population density can lead to significant biomass loss, particularly during the early vegetative stages of crop growth.
The life cycle of Pneumora includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited in soil or specific plant debris, where they can undergo diapause to survive unfavorable weather conditions. Nymphs emerge following seasonal rainfall and undergo several instars, feeding on available vegetation as they gradually develop into winged adults capable of dispersal.
