Description

The Anglewing butterfly (Polygonia) belongs to the family Nymphalidae, order Lepidoptera. These butterflies are named for the jagged, irregular margins of their wings, which resemble withered leaves. While primarily known for their aesthetic beauty, their larval stage can sometimes reach pest status in specific agricultural settings.

These insects are polyphagous and target a variety of host plants. The most common economic damage is observed in hop yards (Humulus lupulus) and various fruit-bearing bushes. The larvae feed on foliage, and while they rarely cause catastrophic losses, their presence can affect the vigor of the plants.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis including egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Unlike many other insects, Polygonia species overwinter as adults. They emerge from hibernation in early spring to mate and lay eggs on the leaves of host plants, beginning the cycle for the new season.

The caterpillars are distinct due to the presence of branching spines on their bodies. They exhibit a gregarious feeding behavior in early stages, consuming leaves and leaving only the veins. This feeding pattern reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which is particularly detrimental to young or stressed crops.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to handle this pest. Monitoring and mechanical removal are often sufficient for small gardens. In commercial agriculture, the focus should be on maintaining healthy plants and applying targeted insecticides only when the population density reaches significant levels.
