Description
Polytus mellerborgii is a significant pest belonging to the family Curculionidae and the order Coleoptera. This species is widely recognized as a serious threat to banana plantations, causing damage by inhabiting and feeding within the internal structures of banana plants.
The primary hosts of this weevil are plants of the genus Musa. The larvae bore into the pseudostem, rhizome, and the base of the plant. Unlike some other pests that feed on leaves, the hidden nature of this weevil makes it particularly challenging to identify and control in large-scale agricultural environments.
The life cycle encompasses four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in the crevices of the host plant. The larvae then tunnel into the vascular tissue, causing internal damage and disruption of nutrient transport. The pupal stage is also completed within the plant tissue, before the adult weevil emerges to reproduce.
Damage caused by this pest leads to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and structural instability of the plant. Infested banana plants are prone to tipping over during moderate winds. Furthermore, the tunneling activity creates pathways for secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens, which exacerbate the degradation of the plant's vascular system.
Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key control measures include:

- Maintaining strict field hygiene by destroying infested stumps.
- Using pheromone-based traps to monitor and reduce adult population density.
