Pomatias is a genus of small terrestrial gastropod mollusks belonging to the family Pomatiasiidae. Unlike the common garden slug, these snails possess a distinct, spiral-shaped shell and a calcareous operculum that seals the opening. They are often found in shaded, calcareous habitats and can become a nuisance in home gardens and nurseries.

The primary crops affected by Pomatias include seedlings of various vegetables, leafy greens, and ornamental plants. Because they favor moist conditions and high-calcium soils, they frequently colonize greenhouses and shaded vegetable beds. Their feeding behavior is opportunistic, targeting the most tender parts of plants during periods of high humidity.

The lifecycle of Pomatias is dependent on environmental humidity. They lay eggs in moist soil, where the young snails develop over several weeks. During periods of drought, they exhibit high survivability by retreating deep into the soil and closing their shells. This ability to hibernate makes them resilient to standard environmental stressors that typically limit other pest populations.

The damage caused by Pomatias is characterized by irregular holes in foliage and the consumption of sprouts. Because they graze extensively, they can strip leaves down to the veins, severely weakening the plant. Moreover, their slime trails and feeding wounds provide entry points for fungal pathogens, which can lead to secondary infections and systemic plant decay.

Effective management strategies for controlling Pomatias include the following:

• Maintaining clean cultivation by removing plant debris and weeds where snails hide.
• Applying physical barriers such as copper tape or crushed eggshells to protect vulnerable seedlings.
• Implementing regular monitoring and hand-picking during evening hours when snails are most active.
• Applying molluscicides containing iron phosphate, which is safer for the environment than traditional metaldehyde baits.
