Say's blister beetle (scientific name: Pomphopoaea sayi) is a member of the Meloidae family within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are recognized for their metallic appearance and the production of cantharidin, a toxic compound that protects them from predators but can cause skin irritation in humans upon contact.

The beetle primarily damages fruit trees, ornamental plants, and various broadleaf crops. Adults are highly attracted to blossoms and fresh foliage. Their feeding habits often result in the total destruction of flower buds and reproductive tissues, which directly impacts the yield of the affected plants.

The life cycle of Pomphopoaea sayi involves hypermetamorphosis, which is characteristic of the Meloidae family. The larval stage is often dependent on the nests of ground-nesting bees, where they feed on stored pollen and bee larvae. This biology makes them difficult to manage without harming beneficial pollinators.

Damage is typically localized and appears as ragged edges on leaves and complete destruction of floral parts. Large swarms can descend on a field or garden, causing extensive defoliation within a few days. The presence of these beetles is often sporadic, making early detection and field monitoring critical for effective intervention.
