Praon

Important agronomical note: insects of the genus Praon are not plant pests; they are beneficial parasitoid wasps. These insects are essential components of integrated pest management (IPM) programs, functioning as natural biological control agents against various aphid species.

Systematically, Praon belongs to the order Hymenoptera, family Braconidae. They are small braconid wasps that specialize in parasitizing aphids, effectively suppressing their reproduction and preventing widespread crop damage caused by heavy aphid infestations.

These wasps target aphids on a diverse range of crops, including vegetables, cereals, greenhouses, and ornamental plants. Their ability to track aphid colonies via plant volatiles makes them highly efficient searchers in both open fields and protected environments.

The life cycle is characterized by endoparasitism: the female wasp deposits an egg inside the aphid's body. The larva feeds internally on the host. A distinctive feature of this genus is that the mature larva exits the aphid and spins a cocoon underneath the aphid's husk, lifting it off the surface, which creates a specific mummified appearance.

To preserve Praon populations, growers should prioritize the use of selective insecticides that do not harm beneficial wasps. Maintaining floral borders near fields provides necessary nectar sources for adult wasps, thereby boosting their longevity and searching efficiency in the managed crop area.
