Ash root aphid

The Ash root aphid (Prociphilus fraxini) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is recognized for its unique adaptation to feeding on ash trees (Fraxinus species), where it colonizes both roots and aerial parts of the host plant throughout its complex life cycle.

This pest specifically targets ash trees. In nursery settings or urban landscapes, infestations can cause significant stress to host plants. The aphid utilizes the tree as a primary host, where it completes its reproductive cycles, significantly impacting the nutrient transport system of the trees through its sap-sucking activity.

The biological cycle of Prociphilus fraxini is notable for its migratory behavior and the production of protective white waxy secretions. These secretions form a fluffy, cotton-like mass that covers the aphid colonies, acting as a physical barrier against desiccation and environmental stressors, which makes manual control challenging.
