Ash root aphid

The Ash root aphid (Prociphilus kuwanai) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is recognized for its unique lifestyle, as it resides almost exclusively underground, feeding on the root systems of ash trees, which makes it a challenging pest for foresters and arborists to manage.

This species primarily targets various species of the genus Fraxinus. By colonizing the roots, the aphid disrupts the tree's ability to uptake water and nutrients effectively. Due to its subterranean habitat, the population can reach high densities before the host tree shows visible signs of decline or health degradation.

The life cycle of Prociphilus kuwanai is complex and involves several stages, including the production of wax-covered colonies on the roots. These waxy secretions act as a protective layer against soil moisture and some soil-dwelling predators. Winged stages are periodically produced to migrate and colonize new, healthy host trees in the vicinity.

Damage caused by this aphid manifests as the formation of galls and root lesions, which severely limit the tree's physiological vitality. Affected trees often exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and general thinning of the canopy. In severe infestation cases, the root system damage makes the tree significantly more vulnerable to drought, pathogens, and environmental stressors.
