Description

The mango gall midge, belonging to the genus Procontarinia, is a tiny fly within the Cecidomyiidae family (order Diptera). This pest is a notorious threat to mango orchards worldwide, causing significant losses in fruit production due to its specialized feeding habits on host tissues.

This pest primarily infests the leaves of mango trees, where larvae induce the formation of distinct galls. These galls are abnormal tissue growths triggered by the chemical secretions of the larvae during feeding, which disrupt the normal physiological processes of the leaf, including transpiration and photosynthesis.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, several larval instars confined within the gall, a pupal stage, and the emergence of winged adults. The timing of the life cycle is closely synchronized with the flush of new vegetative growth on the host tree, allowing the midge to thrive during periods of maximum leaf expansion.

Symptoms appear as numerous small circular bumps on the leaf surface. High-density infestations lead to leaf curl, premature senescence, and dropping of foliage. Chronic damage throughout the season can lead to a general decline in tree vigor, resulting in stunted growth and significantly reduced fruit yields year after year.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Monitoring is essential to determine the timing of insecticide applications, which should be directed at the adult stage before egg-laying occurs. Cultural practices, such as pruning heavily infested shoots and proper orchard sanitation, are crucial for reducing the overwintering population of the midge.
