Pygmy mushroom mite
Proctolaelaps pygmaeus
Description
Systematic position: This organism belongs to the class Arachnida, order Mesostigmata (Gamasid mites), and family Blattisociidae. Proctolaelaps pygmaeus is widely distributed and, while often associated with diverse microhabitats, it is recognized as a significant pest of commercial mushroom crops where it transitions to feeding on fungal tissues.
Host crops: The mite primarily infests facilities engaged in the cultivation of mushrooms such as white button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) and oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). Beyond fungal cultures, it can be found in stored products, grain, and damp compost, where it thrives on existing mold growth and associated microorganisms.
Biology and life cycle: The species possesses a rapid developmental rate, which is a major concern for growers. Under favorable conditions (warmth and high humidity), the cycle from egg to reproductive adult can be completed in just a few days. The mites are highly mobile and can be spread through contaminated tools, clothing, or infested substrate materials, quickly colonizing new areas of the mushroom farm.
Damage and harmfulness: The primary damage is caused by the mites grazing on the mycelium. This destruction prevents the development of fungal fruiting bodies, leading to significant yield losses. Furthermore, the mites act as vectors for various diseases and bacteria that cause bacterial blotch or other rots in mushrooms, thereby secondary complicating the sanitary condition of the culture.
Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for mitigating risks. Key strategies involve strict hygiene protocols, such as steam-treating or pasteurizing all substrates and casing materials. Chemical control with acaricides should be used with caution, adhering strictly to pre-harvest intervals and safety regulations for edible crops. Regular monitoring with a loupe or microscope is recommended to detect initial infestations before they become unmanageable.
