Description

Prodiplosis is a genus of small flies within the Cecidomyiidae family, commonly known as gall midges. These insects are significant agricultural pests that induce the formation of galls on various plant organs, severely affecting plant development and crop yields.

The pest targets a wide variety of crops, including solanaceous plants like tomatoes and potatoes, as well as legumes and citrus species. Its impact is global, often causing widespread damage in greenhouse environments and open-field cultivation, leading to substantial economic losses.

The life cycle begins when adult females deposit eggs into tender tissues, such as flower buds, terminal shoots, or young leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the plant tissue to feed, causing the plant to respond by forming galls, which serve as protection and a food source for the larvae.

Damage typically manifests as stunted growth, distortion of leaves and stems, and the premature shedding of flower buds and developing fruit. Because the larvae remain hidden within these abnormal growths, they are often protected from contact insecticides, making early identification essential.

Control strategies rely on an integrated approach. Essential practices include monitoring pest activity through yellow sticky cards, pruning and properly disposing of infested plant parts, and applying systemic insecticides when necessary. Maintaining field hygiene remains the most critical step in breaking the life cycle of this pest.
