The blueberry gall midge (Prodiplosis vaccinii) is a destructive insect pest belonging to the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae. It is known primarily for its impact on blueberry plantations, where it specifically targets the tender, actively growing tissues of the plant.
This pest mainly affects blueberry species (Vaccinium spp.). The adults are tiny, fragile flies, but their larvae are the main agents of damage. They feed on the meristematic tissue of the terminal buds, which prevents the proper development of new shoots during the growing season.
The biological cycle involves several generations per year. The insect overwinters in the soil as a pupa. As soon as temperatures rise, adults emerge to mate and lay eggs in the developing leaf folds of the blueberry tips. The larvae feed within these protected areas, causing the leaves to curl, twist, and eventually turn black and die.
The economic impact of Prodiplosis vaccinii is significant, particularly in young plantings where structural growth is critical. Repeated damage causes the plant to lose its apical dominance, leading to stunted, bushier, and less productive plants that fail to reach their full yield potential.
